devotion is a coordination technology
the uncertainty β courage β faith pipeline
> human beings do not always seek truth
> we often seek the elimination of uncertainty
> a false certainty can feel psychologically safer than an unresolved truth
> everything is an uncertainty problem
> uncertainty is a courage problem
> courage is a faith problem
> uncertainty is not entirely an intellectual condition
> uncertainty is experienced through the nervous system
> a dysregulated nervous system seeks resolution over truth
> a dysregulated nervous system would rather accept a false certainty than remain inside an unresolved reality
> judgment is often the premature elimination of uncertainty
> judgment demands that reality become legible to us
> curiosity allows reality to remain larger than our present understanding
> judgment seeks the certainty of an answer
> curiosity preserves the uncertainty of a question
> judgment collapses uncertainty
> curiosity stays in relationship with it
> curiosity is an act of devotion
> curiosity says: i will stay with this before i know what it will give me
> curiosity is attention without immediate extraction
> attention is the beginning of devotion (mary oliver)
> faith is not certainty
> faith is the capacity to remain coherent without it
> devotion is faith expressed through time
> curiosity is devotion expressed through attention
> devotion is a strategy because most meaningful work requires acting long before the outcome can justify the action (ch 2 verse 47)
> devotion allows us to work without demanding that reality immediately reward us
> the opposite of devotion is not disbelief
> the opposite of devotion is constant renegotiation
> a person without devotion must decide again every morning whether the work is worth doing
> every difficult morning becomes another referendum on whether to remain
> a devoted person has already decided
> devotion coordinates a person with their future self
> devotion eliminates the need to continually resolve the uncertainty of commitment
> faith coordinates the interior: thought, attention, desire, fear, and action
> ritual coordinates faith across bodies
> devotion coordinates faith across time
> shared devotion coordinates people through uncertainty
> institutions coordinate faith across generations
> coordination does not require complete agreement
> people can hold different models while remaining oriented toward the same thing
> a group can disagree about what the work means while remaining devoted to its continuation
> the best coordination technologies do not eliminate uncertainty
> the best coordination technologies increase our capacity to remain together inside it
> this is how fields, religions, movements, marriages, laboratories, and civilizations persist before their outcomes are known
> ritual makes devotion repeatable
> institutions make devotion durable
> a good institution preserves commitment across fluctuations in mood, personnel, fashion, and short-term outcomes
> an institution is a promise made by people who may never meet one another
> the meaning crisis may also be a devotion crisis
> we keep searching for meaning while refusing to belong to anything that could make demands of us
> we want meaning without obligation
> we want purpose without surrender
> we want belonging without allowing anything to place a lasting claim on us
> meaning is rarely found through infinite optionality
> meaning is not discovered through analysis
> meaning accumulates around what we repeatedly choose to serve
> devotion turns desire into responsibility
> devotion makes something more important than the continual optimization of the self
> meaning is not βfoundβ
> meaning is something devotion allows to accumulate

> automation is the continuation of our desire to eliminate uncertainty at civilizational scale
> we automate whatever can be specified so that we no longer have to rely on faith, trust, presence, or judgment
> anything that can be specified, repeated, measured, and detached from the person will become cheaper
> automation will make competence abundant
> devotion begins where specification ends
> what cannot be detached from the person will become priceless: taste, courage, presence, judgment, care, conviction, loyalty, and devotion
> machines can execute a commitment
> machines cannot decide what is worthy of one
> the scarce human capacity will not be intelligence
> the scarce human capacity will be the courage to give oneself sincerely to something whose value cannot yet be proven
> anything automated will become abundant
> anything requiring devotion will become sacred
> if we solve for all the certainty, what is left?
